Episode 84: Capcom

Popular game company Capcom is the focus of Episode 84.  So many games, so much music, where does one start?  Founded relatively late in the video game world (1983), Capcom certainly had a hefty roster of female composers, more so than any other company at the time, and so this episode is almost a celebration of women in video game music as well a company focus.  Brent and Rob explore a lot of the more obscure Capcom titles, but throw in a couple Mega Man tracks for good measure.  Also, even though no DuckTales music is played on this episode, the long-standing mystery of its composer is finally uncovered!  Full track listing below.

  1. The quiz track is from Final Fight, called "Slum Alleyway" on the snesmusic.org spc set. Great episode, I can never get enough Capcom music!

That Mighty Final Fight piece has a lot of similarities with some of Takehara's other work I've noticed. Tommahawk Man's stage comes to mind - from Mega Man 6, which has probably the most emotional Mega Man soundtrack. I wouldn't be surprised if that MFF track was hers. Part of it also reminds me of Boomer Kuwanger from Mega Man X, another game she (and Setsuo Yamamoto!) worked on. Actually, there's several tracks possibly by her that come to mind, she has a pretty distinct style.

    1. Amazing, you're right! It's Slum Alleyway from Final Fight, from composer Yoshihiro Sakaguchi, one of the only two soundtracks he is known have composed himself (the other being Street FIghter). Congratulations! Please send an email to legacymusichour@gmail.com with your name and address. And thanks for playing!

    2. Yoko Shimomura also did some of Final Fight, so it seems the only soundtrack Sakaguichi did all by himself was Street Fighter.

Also, Yamachan for section-z is Kumi Yamaga. From what I know, she only did 3 soundtracks. (Section-Z, 1943: the Battle of Midway, and 1943 Kai.) No clue who Kuwachan is though..

    3. On here, Yoko Shimomura isn't listed as a composer for Final Fight:

Where did you find that she worked on it?

    4. Reaaaaaly late response, but her site (midiplex) lists the game as a minor role, which normally means she did 1-2 tracks.

      Also, Hifumi is Hiromitsu Takaoka.

  3. One of the sounds in that Destiny of an Emperor sounds like the "item get" from some game I can't put my name on. It plays at 32:13. It's on the tip of my tongue!
