Episode 100: Free Play 10 (Live)

Brent and Rob celebrate the 100th episode of The Legacy Music Hour video game music podcast with a special live recording.  It's basically just another free play episode, but with coconut cake, orange juice, vegan peanut-butter cookies, and a small audience in attendance.  Kind of like a listening party.  Guests include Nathan Barnatt, Pablo Bert, Jacob Sirof, and Kevin Shea.  Plus, VGM Karaoke.  Special thanks to Katie for dealing with the tech stuff.  Also, thanks to the NerdMelt Theater.  And, thanks to Lindsay for the cookies.  One more, thanks to Amoeba Music for sponsoring the prize (what prize? you'll see).  Note: Unfortunately, the photo isn't an exact representation of who was there, as some people had left by the time the picture was taken.  Full track listing below.

  1. Great episode. You dudes should consider having guests more often. It's awesome when it's just you guys (more familiar and intimate, I guess), but it's also cool to get other people's voices in on occaision. The debate about beat em ups is my favorite part of this episode.

Hope you guys keep doing this for a long time to come.

  2. Congratulations on your 100th anniversary! This was a fun episode, I only wish I could have been in attendance. That Pebble Beach Golf Links track might be the highlight of the episode -- seriously. Guess I oughta check out Spyro Gyra, huh? :)

    2. Groovy stuff, for sure. It actually reminds me of some of the Breath of Fire 3 soundtrack by Akari Kaida and Yoshino Aoki. The game's soundtrack is often criticized for being too "elevator," but I dig it. It's beyond 16-bit, but it might be right up your alley.

I think these were both composed by Akari Kaida:

    3. So weird! I posted here, and it disappeared again! I know no one's deleting them, because it'd say "post was deleted by so and so". So I wonder why blogspot is just dropping my posts. We use wordpress for our Rebel's Cause Radio blogs....blogspot must be holding that against me. Anyway, I'll do "take two" in another reply.

    4. I totally could hear the Michael Franks (MF) going on in this track! Actually, when I heard you mention MF, I was startled, and then pleased. It seems than anyone I talk to is like "Who the heck is MF?" And no, I don't think living in a midsized metro in the middle of the midwest has much to do with that because a) people outside of the area don't seem to know about him either, and b) the internet is "the great equalizer", isn't it? :-)

Actually, my discovery of MF had nothing to do with the internet. About 10yrs ago, I used to troll places like Goodwill because they used to be a treasure trove for retro gaming. They also had a pretty robust collection of vinyl records, and I used to peruse those a lot too. Well one day, I discover this curious little album called "The Art of Tea" (1975) by some guy named "Michael Franks." On the back of the album, it says who played on it, and I recognized both Larry Carlton and Joe Sample, so I figured I'd give it a try. There were a couple other albums of his there, and so I picked them up as well. They were "Tiger in the Rain" (1979), "One Bad Habit" (1980), "Objects of Desire" (1982), "Passion Fruit" (1983), and "Skin Dive" (1985). And this was how I got introduced to MF.

I love MF's music! Fairly diverse, yet very "signature". And his voice! Oh man! It's a little on the weak side, but it's one of the smoothest, if not -the- smoothest voice I've ever heard! Definitely iconic! His lyrics are a little risque, which I'm personally not real big on (I.e. "Eggplant" is supposedly an extended double entendre, and a pretty dirty one at that), but it actually creates something of a "musical irony" to have such eye popping lyrics coming from such soft, smooth music and vocalisms.

I do like "Art of Tea", and I like "Tiger in the Rain" even better. But even more than that, I like his early 80's stuff. Some of the highlights for me are "On my way home to you", "Love Duet", "Your secret's safe with me", and above all, "Rainy Night in Tokyo" and "Sunday Morning here with you." Those last two songs just blow me away! If you haven't heard them, you've gotta! I'll post links in a separate post (I'm thinking the links might be what's making my posts go away.) Check these songs out!

Both these songs are off his 1983 album, "Passion Fruit." Other good songs off this album are "When I'm alone at Night", and "When Sly Calls."

Also, here's "Love Duet" off of his 1982 album, "Objects of Desire".

Here's the story on this song: A guy and a girl break up, and they're thinking of each other. When they run into each other on the street, all the feelings come flooding back. This happens at the bridge between the verse and the chorus. I think the music in that bridge just -nails- the mood, the pain, the hope, the fear, the desire, I think it just does it -perfectly!- Check it out!

  3. I'm so bummed that I missed this. You guys should have another live event in the LA area soon. I swear I'll make it next time.

  4. Great episode, guys! When I heard this was live, I really did start thinking of ways to get myself from Des Moines to L.A. I would've loved to have been there...c'mon, free O.J., who could pass that up?

Thanks for the shout-out, and you're very welcome for the game. I'm glad you guys got so much fun out of it! I actually am going to be sending you guys some other stuff, a couple soundtracks, and maybe an attempt at a St. John VGM dance mix. I'll let you guys know if I need the address to the LMHHQ again.

I also literally threw my fist in the air and did a "Yes!" under my breath when I heard you say Pitfall II on Atari 2600! What an awesome track all things considered (actually, I wont swear to it, but I -think- Pitfall II uses a Pokey chip (the sound system in the Atari 5200).

Great VGM Karaoke from the both of you! I'm not sure which one I'd pick as the winner, they were both really good!

There were a couple SNES/SFC tracks that you said sounded "very Sega Genesis". I agreed with all but one, and also thought another one sounded Genesisy that didn't get mentioned. This is pretty easy to account for. Remember that just because SNES is sample based, that doesn't mean that those samples might not be samples of synthesizers. My guess is that they were sampling an FM synth, which would explain the Genesis-like sound.

Lastly, there was one SNES track with a prominent PSG voice, and that voice was sooooo clear and crisp! I found out that the SNES CPU (65c816) is not its own chip, but is contained in a chip called the "Ricoh 5A22." The NES was the same way. It's MOS6502 processor was not standalone either, but was contained in the "Ricoh 2A03." The Ricoh 2A03 also contained the NES's entire sound system. Well, what's interesting is that in an aborted bid for backwards compatibility, the SNES' Ricoh 5A02 contained the entire Ricoh 2A03....which means the NES' PSG system. Now, I'm getting mixed signals on whether that PSG is usable in 16-bit mode, but with as clear as those PSG voices are, and with as muffly everything else SNES is, I'm thinking it's gotta be that Ricoh 2A03 making those noises.

In any case, you boys keep up the good work, and I'll continue to keep plugged in, as well as try to spread your fame as I'm able. Before we know it, it'll be episode 200, and hopefully I'll be able to make it L.A. for that one....make sure there's plenty of O.J!

    God Bless!

  5. I disagree with Kenny about guests. I do enjoy the guest eps but Legacy does one thing and does it very well. No need in my opinion to confuse your singleness of purpose.

This was a great ep guys, congratulaions. I also wish I could have been there. Maybe some day I'll have enough money to fly to la on short notiice.

My only complaint? When I heard the "what exactly is Battletoads?" conversation I thought yeah, he probably shouldnt be a returning guest.

  6. Congratulations guys! I was kind of worried at the beginning that the stereo video game tracks would be in mono because of the episode being recorded live. Thank goodness Rob started out with a Super Famicom track to ease my fears.

This episode is my new all time favorite, so thanks for the providing us listeners that couldn't not make it out there with great guests, game music, and conversation.

Brent, I picked up your new comedy CD and I haven't laughed that hard in a while. Great stuff! Everyone who posts in the comment section should do yourself a favor and order a copy.

    1. Thanks, yeah, we actually had to replace the non-talking parts of the music tracks with new WAVs of the tracks, because the mics weren't muted when we played them. Also, we weren't confident they were recording in stereo.

  7. As a newbie I feel like I'm so late to this party, but now that I've watched 100 episodes - I think more than 100 now ? This was such a treat, unlike some of the haters from the past, I really enjoyed all the guests, they all brought something fun to the table and having them all there was so great. Also the VGM karaoke this episode was easily my favourite. I can see you guys are still going even now, can't wait to catch up and be right there at the current ep with you, I live overseas but if we can ever travel to different continents again, I will 100% attend one of your shows, you've given so much joy to my dull work days.
